Maggie’s aphasia presents as a mild impairment of language and cognition impacting her functional ability. She is able to self-correct and has minimal receptive difficulties. She has right-sided hemiplegia.

Before her stroke Maggie was a very active and motivated person competing in several sports including marathon and ultra-marathon events. She played viola in a national orchestra.

As a result of the Challenge Programme Maggie has participated in Swimming, Golf and Air-Rifle Shooting, and trialed Gymnastics. She also delivered an online Zoom session about healthy eating and nutrition which was drawn from her previous job as a nutritional advisor. She has said how the Challenge Programme has improved her well-being, fitness and general confidence in her life.

“I have participated in several Challenge opportunities including golf, swimming and shooting, my favourite one is golf, who knew it is possible to play one-armed golf?! It’s an activity that I can do and feel ‘normal’ on a regular golf course with both able and disabled friends and family, as it’s so inclusive it really raises my spirits. I think I’m actually better now than I ever was before my stroke! This is down to the expert tuition from Karl and encouragement from the Volunteers. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Dyscover.

Thank you Dyscover for all you do for me.”
