Take a look at Richards ‘significant progress’ and reduced reliance on his walking aid.
Richard’s aphasia presents as a severe impairment of language with expressive difficulty and use of only a handful of single words. He experiences some difficulty with auditory comprehension and dyspraxia. He is able to share information by gesture, drawing and writing. He also has right-sided hemiplegia.
Before his stroke Richard ran his own business as a wholesaler, was a coach for a junior football team and a keen golfer.
Richard participates in our Challenge Programme, enjoying Swimming, Golf, Cycling, Horse riding and has also taken part in adventure activities at an outward bound sports centre with wall climbing and abseiling. Whilst these activities proved to be challenging both physically and mentally, his progress has been significant. He no longer relies on a walking stick and has begun to dive and swim to the bottom of the pool and taken part in water polo.
Playing golf left-handed has enabled Richard to re-engage with a favourite hobby and he has gone on to compete and play with his son independently of Dyscover.
