Friday, 4th April marked the world’s first Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) Awareness Day. PPA is a term that refers to a group of dementias that affect a person’s speech and language.
This initiative has been developed by people affected by Primary Progressive Aphasia, alongside speech and language therapists Dr Anna Volkmer and Rosemary Townsend. The project is a result of research, collaboration, and co-production, aiming to raise awareness of how speech and language therapy can support individuals living with PPA.
Raising Awareness in the Lead-Up
In the months ahead, the organisers will be sharing content across social media, emails, and other platforms to promote PPA Awareness Day. This will include collaborations with organisations such as:
- Rare Dementia Support
- Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy
- NIHR Dementia Researcher (special podcastcoming on the 17th February)
- Brainy Speech Therapists
- UCL Giving Voice Society
- Therapy Box
At Dyscover, we have been supporting people with PPA and their families since 2015. Rosemary is our highly experienced Speech & Language Therapist who together with Dr. Anna Volkmer has been championing the importance of speech & language therapy involvement for the condition.
