Aphasia Institute Canada

Posted 23rd April 2019

Rosemary couldn’t miss an opportunity to visit the Aphasia Institute (AI) in Toronto when holidaying in Canada. 40 years ago, therapists at the AI pioneered many of the techniques and approaches that we use at Dyscover.
Rosemary was invited to observe conversation groups, join a debate club, and chat with group members, volunteers and staff. At the end of the day she met with the centre’s Speech and Language Pathologists to discuss and compare ideas and approaches.
Despite differences in funding and more volunteer-led services at the AI, Rosemary discovered many similarities especially in terms of what people with aphasia say they want and need.
Group member Christine, who had a stroke at 49, said ‘ I was sad and mad for two and a half years. I needed someone to explain my aphasia and give me emotional support. I found that here – it’s a remarkable place’
